This series of ceramic sculptures examines the concept of unravelling as both a sculptural gesture and an emotional state. Through these forms, I delve into how belonging is negotiated and how material fragility can hold profound resilience. My work engages the meeting points of nature and culture, where the act of becoming is always accompanied by the balance of undoing.
I use paper clay to build forms that are deliberately loose and precarious – objects that seem to unravel as much as hold a moment of memory. Their instability reflects the uncertainty of starting over, while their delicate strips conceal a quiet persistence. Rather than fixed vessels, my sculptures are temporary resting points where balance is tested, belonging unsettled, and the invisible weight of experience allowed to take form. In their presence, sorrow and wonder coexist, each holding space for the other. My work does not seek to resolve these contradictions, but to reveal their entanglement – the beauty and difficulty of living between that has been left behind and what has yet to come.

In this series I create structures in clay to investigate the idea of unravelling. Each sculpture has several resting points playfully blurring the line between place and purpose, seen and unseen. My work investigates the interplay of nature and culture as they unfold notions of balance and belonging.
In this series, I explore themes of entanglement through material experimentation and metaphor, as they both relate to the uncertainty of becoming. Through precarious and intuitive handwork, I construct loose vessels in clay to question the paradox and tension between individuality and community. With inviting arches and forbidding angles, my sculptures capture moments of material wonder and connection in clay. The history of making plays a meaningful role in my process and drives my interest in the visual stories conveyed by inanimate objects.
I am fascinated by the way emotions colour moments in time and how the cherished and reviled parts of an experience reflect an inner landscape in fluid transition. Paper clay subverts the meaning of “thin places” as points of weakness to prove a place of mysterious possibility. The ribbon-like strips of clay reference delicate systems, material versatility and elements of collage.

This piece explores the confusing intersection of pride and debilitation.
These glazed porcelain “containers” record the unraveling of healing with all the challenges and deceptions of transformation. This body of work came together after a breast cancer diagnosis. The months of chemotherapy promised to hinder my studio time and creative energy. It was uncertain if I could continue working in the studio, despite being told to quit my teaching job, cancel my gym membership and avoid public venues for the following year. It was all so shocking, much like the first time a newborn wakes you five times in a single night. Then a new routine sinks in and you can’t quite make out the line separating your life into before and after.

This work is comprised of pod shaped elements placed around and on top of a slab-built angular porcelain construction. The ceramic elements shift in placement every time the piece is installed.
This series of objects and installations explores the idealism of childhood and play, the tension between fantasy and risk as it plays out in metaphors of balance, slippery slopes and spinning tops. Driving this inquiry are converging interests from the clash of cherished ideals with reviled truths and a relentless desire for their balance. I’m interested in the power of domestic objects to fix, organize and soothe the subtleties and complexities in the everyday loop of relationships. Domestic objects act as intimate witnesses to the tightrope walk among the bittersweet vulnerability of being. Rooted in clay’s invariable association with the delicate, the work explores similar notions of preciousness. This choice of material also stems from the unique ability of clay to imitate other materials as well as archive development through repetition of mark making and transformation. In my process, the clay components are either thrown and altered yielding to imaginary textures and forms; or slab built highlighting sharp, definite lines. Wood, metal and the occasional found object layer the work further with punctuations of stability and representation. The coloured pod-shaped elements pile up and balance precariously against the white angular forms that impose a sense of familiar structure. Floating shelves with numerous, useless support legs balance rolling shapes of unglazed porcelain presenting a tipping sense, playing with the coloured elements, mining possibility.
